Promotion Board Supportive of Corn-Focused Research

Tennessee Corn Promotion Board discusses funding awards to support corn-focused research projects.

The Tennessee Corn Promotion Board (TCPB) recently held its annual winter meeting to review the upcoming year’s budget and approve proposals for developing research-based technologies and practices that will help farmers increase production efficiency and profitability while safeguarding and improving the natural resources needed for agriculture.

TCPB leaders heard from 15 corn-focused researchers from the University of Tennessee and the University of Tennessee Martin seeking funding for innovative projects that support TCPB’s vision of enhancing demand, adding value, and ensuring the sustainability of Tennessee corn farmers and the corn industry as a whole.

A total of $400,029.00 in funding was awarded to support a breadth of research projects, such as finding new uses for corn and corn products, minimizing threats from pests and diseases, and improving the efficiency of inputs.

“Tennessee’s corn farmers have the ability to grow more corn than consumers can utilize as food or feed,” says George McDonald, Chairman of the Tennessee Corn Promotion Board. “In order to sustain the economic viability of corn farmers, it is critical that we discover new uses and markets for Tennessee’s corn crop that meet the needs of a growing and evolving world.”

Some of the approved funding requests include:

George McDonald, TCPB Chairman and his daughter, Sarah welcome board members to their farm for an on-site meeting in Riddleton, TN.

  • Integrated Management of Glyphosate Resistant Grasses such as Goose grass, Jungle rice grass and Johnson grass

  • Optimizing Plant Nutrition and Irrigation through Plant Sap Diagnostic Tools

  • Investigating Ear Rot Resistant Hybrids, Fungicides, and Planting Date on Corn Grain Quality and Yield

  • Corn Grain Agronomics: How to Systematically Reduce Fertilizer Cost Using Broiler Litter

  • Efficient Irrigations for Maximizing Corn Grain Quality and Yield

The proposals were evaluated on project relevance, scientific merit, and qualifications of project personnel. As a condition of funding, progress reports are submitted to TCPB on a quarterly basis.
