Study Shows Grain Exports Support $344 Million In Tennessee Economic Output, 2,511 Jobs
Exports of grain and grain products added $344 million in value to the Tennessee economy in 2018, according to a study commissioned by the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) and the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA).
The study - the fourth in a series conducted by IHS Markit Agribusiness Consulting - showed the positive impact and importance of grains exports to the U.S. economy and jobs.
For the state of Tennessee, it determined that grain and grain products, such as corn, ethanol, and residual milling feed products supported:
$344 million in economic output,
$119 million in gross state product (GSP), and
2,511 jobs in the state economy.
“International trade is important to the success of Tennessee farmers and its economy,” said Carol Reed, Executive Director of Tennessee Corn. “This report emphasizes that the positive economic impacts of corn exports extend well beyond the farm gate. Facilitating agricultural exports involves workers in support industries such as data processing, financial, legal, marketing, and transportation. Because our farmers are so productive, we need to reach outside of our nation’s borders to generate value across Tennessee.”
For the U.S. as a whole, the study showed that grain exports support $64.5 billion in economic output with roughly 295,000 jobs linked directly or indirectly to grain exports.
